A Firewall will help keep bots and hackers out of your WordPress site by blocking them before they can even get there. They are free and can be set up in less than 30 minutes.

WordFence is a security plugin which has a Firewall built into its free version. It will block certain nefarious bots and users from accessing your site. For eg, in the last month 250 users were blocked from this website who were considered dodgy.
Installing Wordfence is very simple and takes only minutes. The firewall feature is free but you can upgrade to the paid plans if you feel your site needs more protection.
PROTIP: You can also discover which IP Addresses are accessing your site a lot and so if you like you can block these individually or even by region and country to add extra security to your site.
// Cloudflare CDN:
When you set up Cloudflare you also get access to their Firewall feature. The advantage of this is that you can use it in addition to WordFence above and it also helps to speed up your site because it is also a content delivery network.
