How to choose an effective and affordable domain name

Take your chosen name and add an extra word to it to crate a unique name as well as one which is obscure and therefore is cheaper than more high competition domain names.

Table of contents:

Find your key words:

A domain name is a key indicator to search engines for SEO so try to add a key word or phrase in it which is useful to your SEO and related to the topic with which you site is about. For example, if you were a mechanic you might want to have the word ‘repair’ or ‘car repair’ or mechanic’ in the domain name.

Add a modifier:

Take you key phrase and add a positive but off beat modifier word to it. For example, ‘champs’ or some other word which reflects positively on the key phrase. This turns your domain name into something like,

  • carrepairchamps.com
  • autorepairchamps.com
  • champsmechanics.com
  • or choose some other combinations to get some other options but you get the jist.
  • Then pick one and start to search it in your domain registrar. Sometimes you can also do this with your hosting company but I like to use namecheap.com

PROTIP: Use a word association tool online to get ideas for modifier words and key phrases.

Search in namecheap.com:

namecheap.com will allow you to search and buy domain names and is often lower priced than many other domain name services.

Whats Next?

If you don’t already have a hosting account to run your WordPress site then that is the next step after getting a domain name. Some hosts provide a free domain name (for the first year) with an account but after the first year these are often more expensive than namecheap.com so its still preferable to use their service from a cost point of view.

You can use our "Fast Lane Method" to search and browse WordPress Hosting Plans and avoid price increases after the initial contract. Often hosting plans are offered at a lower price on a monthly, yearly or tri-yearly contract and then after this time they renew at a higher cost. The Fast Lane Method allows you to search through hosting plans by the renewal cost and avoid a surprise cost increase!
