You can enable two factory authentication on your Bluehost Account by logging into your Bluehost Dashboard and turning this feature on and then adding your preferred method to authenticate, ie email or text message to your mobile device. I’ll show you how in this article.

Why use two factor authentication

So other people can’t login and maliciously use your account. It will provide you with a lot more security as once you log in you will be asked to ‘authenticate’ the login attempt before gaining access. Authentication will take place either by email to your email address associated with your Bluehost Account or my text message to the mobile phone attached to the account.

It is becoming increasingly more common to be hacked and in the modern age people still do not use different passwords for each account. This means once someone finds one password they often are able to use it to login to various accounts you may have. Two factor Authentication stops this.

Hosting

This guide is specifically for Bluehost but at a high level the info is similar to that of other hosts. You will just need to set it up via their dashboard which may have different settings than that of Bluehost.

If you are searching for hosting try our Host Plan Selector Tool which allows you to search WordPress hosting plans easily and cost effectively. If you choose based on a hosting company alone you can get a worse deal because Hosting Companies plans can vary widely even within the same company.

How to turn on two factor Auth?

  1. Login to your Bluehost Dashboard.
  2. Go to your profile icon and click it in top right of screen.
  3. Then select ‘Security’ tab. This will load the page where you can turn on two factor authentication and select the authentication method.
  4. You can choose either between email or text message to your mobile phone.
  5. The next time you login you will be required to authenticate via your chosen method.
  6. If you think your mobile number will change int he future then don’t use that method. Instead use email.
  7. Whichever method you use once you try to login again, before gaining access to the Bluehost Dashboard you will be asked to enter a numerical code which will be sent to your email of phone a few seconds after attempting to login. Take this number and enter it in the form presented to you on the same screen as where you logged in.
  8. Once you submit that number you will be redirected to the dashboard.

Who is especially in need of using two factor Auth?

If you travel frequently away from your home network to use the internet (perhaps for work or you work out of a cafe sometimes) then your ‘surface area’ to be attacked is greater than if you were to just use your home network. As such you are more at risk to people hacking your data on public and unsecured networks.
