How to give your developer access to your Bluehost website (WordPress)

The best way to give access to your WordPress site (on Bluehost or not) is to create a User account for them to log in to the CMS by themselves. You can manage their access with out of the box WP functionality in the User Creation process or install a Members Plugin in order to have more fine tuned control over what that user can access and do int he CMS as it is a sensitive area.

Why give access?

It’s common for developers and other tech staff or freelancers to need this kind of access to your site in order to either fix it or execute certain tasks. If you don’t trust the person you are giving access to then its not a good idea to give access. Find someone you trust to do it.

Is it safe?

Someone who has access to your host or WordPress CMS has a lot of power over your data and site in general. They could even take it offline very easily so be careful who you give access to. It’s normal for developers and tech people to need access from time to time but not often permanently unless you are working with a developer on an ongoing basis.

PROTIP: Revoke access once the person you are allowing in has done their job or whenever you want to. I’ll outline in the options below.

How to give access to WordPress CMS

The best way is to create a new User for whoever needs access by going to the ‘Users’ menu on the left once you have logged into your CMS. You can add their email and a few other details and an email notification will be sent to them telling them how they can login. Their password will only be known to them.

Once you want to revoke the access you can simply delete this user from the Users list in the WP CMS.

PROTIP: You can give Users certain access to allow them to do and see only certain things. Out of the box WordPress only has limited abilities here but more more fine tuned control take a look at trying to find a Members Plugin for WordPress which will allow more options.

How to give access to the Bluehost (hosting) Account

You can’t really do this in any safe and structured way. The best thing to do is to give the person access to the WordPress CMS as per the above instructions. Although there are some reason why your developer may need to have access to your Bluehost account the only way to do this is to give them your login and password to the account.

I would only recommend doing this if you 110% trust your developer. Once they are done change the password by going to the account area of your Bluehost Account.

PROTIP: If you have 2 Factor Authentication turned on then that person may still have issues accessing the site so you may also have to turn this off.

If you don’t trust the developer or don’t know them then don’t share your info at all. Instead research the topic yourself and or ask your Bluehost Customer Service to help you with the task. You are paying for an account so utilize their help as often as you need.
