Is SSL tied to domain or hosting?

A SSL certificate is tied to your domain name in that it encrypts data sent between your site and your users in the case that they are sending information via a form for example. However, an SSL certificate is tied to your hosting account in that this is the place where you should manage and creation, deletion or maintenance of the SSL certificate.

If you need a SSL certificate for your site and you already have a hosting account somewhere then you can often create a SSL certificate from your cPanel of account dashboard. If in doubt contact your customer service. If you still need to get hosting you can view WordPress hosting accounts with free SSL certificates included in them as we created a list of these.

If you feel you haven’t understood all you need to before purchasing hosting check out our what to check before buying hosting guide. You can also search and compare WordPress Hosts by many criteria, including price.
